What do you associate with music?
Music lets us dive into another world and forget time and space. From the very first bar, it has been my aim to use this power of music and to send music lovers, listeners, and my fellow musicians on a journey of sound. Music was already my main priority when I was young. Even today, passion, joy of playing and emotions are very important to me as a person and musician.
Live drummer, drum coach, owner of a large drum school and content creator - have I forgotten anything? That sums it up very well. I find that you can only pass on the "live experience" to your students if you are always live on stage. I currently have two locations of my school in Mainz and Ingelheim. Social media also plays an increasingly important role, not only as a teacher.
Does the topic of social media and video content also play a role in the classroom? Definitely. I put a lot of emphasis on it with my team; that the students are taught in very well-equipped rooms. It doesn't matter whether they are using an acoustic or electric drum set. With the latest recording equipment, we also offer the possibility of video production. I regularly create new drum lesson content myself for my social media channels.
Finally 18... Yes, that's right. Not me, but my drum school "Drumstudio 77", which I founded in 2005 in the beautiful town of Much, Germany.
Your school is special because you don't only offer lessons there, but also directly at the students' houses?
It can be a problem to reach the nearest school, especially in rural areas. That's why I offer face-to-face lessons at the school or we go to the students' homes. One of my specialities is that I offer "Pipe Band Drumming" - online as well as face-to-face.
Ralph, your education shows that you have a lot of knowledge to pass on. What has your career been like? A good education was very important to me. First of all, I took part in the "Professional Program Drums" at the Future Music School and successfully completed it. In order to develop myself further and to deepen my knowledge as an ensemble leader, I also studied at the Berufsfachschule für Musik in Nuremberg and Dinkelsbühl. It is important for me to be broadly established. That's why I then added a degree as a specialist teacher for music and economics at the State Institute in Ansbach.
What is the idea behind 'Test the Best'? "Test The Best" is a campaign by GEWA, a selection of music schools in Germany that belong to the "Percussion Creative" network, and the supporting specialised trade. The drum sets are available for all interested drummers to try out. You don't have to be a student to take advantage of the reliable advice of the contact person. It's very easy: just contact the school for an appointment, try out the kits and get advice. Have fun!
Marc Lamerz is a drummer and music school director of the drum school "Drum Sounds" in southern Germany. He has entrusted his playing with GEWA Digital Drums since this year and is our "Test The Best Partner". He has chosen a GEWA G9 and a GEWA G5 drum kit.
